HTC One M8 sees ‘fading sales’ as competition intensifies

HTC’s newest flagship phone is struggling amid competition from Samsung, Chinese manufacturers, and others, a Canaccord Genuity analyst says.

HTC’s newest flagship smartphone is experiencing “fading sales” amid tough competition, an analyst for financial firm Canaccord Genuity said, adding that competition should get even stiffer later this year as more new phone models enter the market.

The negative review comes as the Taiwan company tries to turn around weakening sales of its smartphones, which have been overshadowed by the far larger advertising budgets of major mobile device makers such as Apple and Samsung Electronics.

Analyst Michael Walkley said his firm’s US wireless surveys found soft sales for the HTC One M8, which he blamed on “intense high-tier Android smartphone competition,” referring to Google’s Android operating system.

HTC’s so called “selfie phone” is on its way to AT&T as an exclusive for the US market it has emerged today. The handset is known as the HTC Eye and as the name suggests it is reportedly very good at taking front facing images, we presume because it backs a solid front camera. The device has been created with one eye (excuse the pun) on the growing trend of selfie photo taking.

According to reports, the HTC Eye will be arriving soon and as part of its global roll out it will get AT&T exclusivity in the United States. Pricing details and exact availability surrounding the handset are still thin on the ground, as are its specs. That said, the HTC Eye is likely to be a mid-range device with the core selling point being its ability to take a selfie shot better than the rest. That means the front facing camera will have to be something that is different from the competition. That could be as simple as HTC bumping the megapixel count, although considering the HTC One M8, E8, and Desire 816 already have 5 megapixel front lenses, HTC will have to bump to at least 8MP.
