As the T-Mobile Girl in television commercials, actress Carly Foulkes represented the wireless carrier with a wholesome pretty-in-pink persona.

In the new “alter ego” T-Mobile ads, Foulkes now rocks biker-chick black. The words “No more Mr. Nice Girl” flash on the screen, as the T-Mobile Girl races through town on a motorcycle.

The underlying message: T-Mobile boasts a speedy 4G network to be reckoned with.

With the new HTC One S phone that reached select stores last week, T-Mobile has the kind of slim, solid and sexy Android-based handset it needs to pull off a makeover.

It’s the first in HTC’s new flagship line of premium smartphones to hit the U.S. market. The HTC One S is $ 199.99 after rebate and with a two-year contract. AT&T’s variant, called the HTC One X, arrives in stores May 6. The smaller HTC One V comes later.

» The basics. The HTC One S is appealing aesthetically and functionally. The gradient blue hardware is made out of an aluminum unibody frame. It weighs 4.3 ounces and is less than one-third of an inch thick.

I’m impressed with its 4.3-inch Super Amoled touchscreen and the way the phone feels in my hand. (AT&T’s HTC One X will have a larger, higher-resolution 4.7-inch display.) The One S is pretty snappy with a dual-core Qualcomm processor.
